📋Overview
Chiari malformation involves a structural defect where the cerebellum sits lower than normal, resulting in the displacement of brain tissue into the upper spinal canal. This typically occurs when the back of the skull is smaller than average or misshapen, which can cause the cerebellar tonsils to be pushed through the foramen magnum.
Clinical classification of the condition is based on the specific anatomy of the brain tissue displacement and may include both congenital and acquired forms. While often present from birth, certain types may not be identified until later stages of life through the use of diagnostic imaging.
