Congenital Syphilis
๐Overview
This condition is caused by the bacterium Treponema pallidum, which can pass through the placenta or be transmitted during the birthing process. Because the infection is acquired during gestation or delivery, it is present in the infant from the time of birth.
Clinical observation identifies this form of the disease as a congenital infection, which distinguishes it from syphilis acquired through other routes later in life. This designation specifically refers to the transmission of the bacterium between a pregnant person and a developing fetus.
