๐Overview
This neglected tropical disease is characterized by a parasitic infection that primarily impacts rural populations with limited access to protected water sources. The condition develops after the ingestion of water contaminated with larvae-carrying water fleas, which allow the parasite to mature within the host body.
The clinical progression involves the migration of the adult female worm to the subcutaneous tissues, where it typically forms a painful blister on the lower extremities to facilitate its emergence. While the infection can cause significant morbidity, international eradication programs have led to a substantial decrease in documented cases.
