Labyrinthitis
๐Overview
Labyrinthitis occurs when the labyrinth, a delicate structure within the inner ear responsible for spatial orientation and sound detection, becomes inflamed. This condition often results in the sudden onset of vertigo alongside hearing-related symptoms, distinguishing it from similar vestibular disorders that do not impact auditory function.
The inflammation is frequently triggered by a viral infection, such as a common cold or flu, though bacterial infections or other inflammatory processes can also be responsible. While the terms are sometimes used interchangeably in clinical settings, modern terminology specifically identifies this condition by the presence of both vestibular and cochlear involvement.
