๐Overview
Narcolepsy is a long-term neurological condition that disrupts the brain's ability to control the timing of sleep and wakefulness. This instability often results in persistent daytime sleepiness and sudden, involuntary episodes of falling asleep during the day.
The disorder may also involve cataplexy, a sudden loss of muscle tone often triggered by intense emotions. These clinical observations reflect a fundamental difficulty in maintaining the boundaries between wakefulness and the rapid eye movement (REM) stage of sleep.
