Premature Ovarian Failure
๐Overview
Premature Ovarian Failure, also referred to as primary ovarian insufficiency, involves the loss of typical ovarian function in individuals younger than 40 years of age. This condition is characterized by the ovaries' inability to produce regular amounts of the hormone estrogen or release eggs consistently.
Unlike menopause, which is a natural and permanent cessation of menstruation, this condition may involve intermittent ovarian activity where periods can occur sporadically. The resulting decrease in estrogen levels often leads to clinical observations similar to those experienced during the menopausal transition.
