Shigellosis
๐Overview
Shigellosis is a clinical condition caused by bacteria belonging to the genus Shigella, which primarily targets the lining of the large intestine. This form of bacterial dysentery leads to intestinal inflammation, often resulting in symptoms such as diarrhea that may contain blood or mucus.
Transmission typically occurs through the fecal-oral route, often involving the consumption of contaminated food or water or close physical contact with an infected person. While historically known as bacillary dysentery, the modern clinical term for this infection is shigellosis.
